KOP 1 - 3D Scanning & Sculpture Digital Twin
Creating a precise digital twin of the sculpture KOP 1 by Belgian artist Bart Lescrève. This project combines physical and digital 3D scanning techniques to archive the artwork permanently and generate a final low-poly 3D render.
Context & Fine Art Archiving
- Fine Art Archiving: Capturing an accurate 3D fingerprint of the sculpture for digital preservation and physical conservation.
- Physical-to-Digital Transition: Digitizing organic textures and surface grain without losing geometrical accuracy during 3D reconstruction.
- Low-Poly Processing & Rendering: Converting raw dense scan data into a clean, optimized final low-poly render.
Technical Workflow & Procedural Processing
- RealityCapture Photogrammetry: Multi-angle high-resolution photo session under controlled lighting, followed by 3D raw mesh generation.
- Procedural Mesh Cleaning (Houdini): Custom node-based pipeline in Houdini to noise-reduce and clean up raw scan data.
- Final Low-Poly Output: Generating the final stylized low-poly render of the sculpture.
Workflow Breakdown
1. Photogrammetric Capture & 3D Reconstruction (RealityCapture)
Challenge: Capture the intricate geometry of the physical sculpture without causing visual artifacts or volume distortion.
Solution: Multi-angle high-resolution photo session processed in RealityCapture to produce a high-density raw 3D model.
2. Procedural Cleanup (Houdini) & Final Low-Poly Render
Challenge: Process raw 3D scan data into a clean, stylized low-poly version while retaining the original artwork's essence.
Solution: Procedural filtering in Houdini to smooth scan noise and produce the final low-poly visual render.
